We stopped doing this when we looked up one day and there were more Germans than us. Nominally we used a lot of state suppression but the end result was the Germanizarion of America (& it's immediate decline).

One could make the argument that it’s much easier for immigrants to assimilate into America today than it was in pre-1924 America. But that’s only because the standard for assimilation has dramatically changed. Over a hundred years ago, we expected Euro immigrants to become Anglos. Now we just want the third worlders coming here to enjoy our mass culture and like working. Current assimilation also doesn’t just change the immigrant. It changes the country to suit the newcomers. That’s what Americans don’t like.
