Something Lucasfilm has failed to understand is that the sequel trilogy successfully rebranded Star Wars as a Christmas-time franchise and no one wants to watch one of these in the summer anymore. (This was part of Solo’s problem too.)

The discourse about the box opening weekend box office projections vs budget discours for The Mandalorian and Grogu betrays that many don’t understand how these things are truly calculated. When a film “makes back its reported budget on opening weekend,” it means it grossed ≥ the production cost (marketing not included). That is considered a massive win: de-risks the movie instantly. Studios need ~2–2.5× budget worldwide to profit — this puts it on track for big success. Everything after is gravy. 🎥💰

@EckhartsLadder The episode with the first Vader Kenobi fight came out within like 2 days of Top Gun Maverick and it was a real come to Jesus moment. Watching that movie then seeing characters like Darth Vader and Obi Wan relegated to a Disney streaming show was when I knew things were broken

The Kenobi show has to be the single biggest blunder Disney has made outside of Ep 9. There was massive fan interest, they had a good per episode budget, legacy characters… but the result was mostly abysmal. So many non-hardcore fans gave Star Wars streaming a chance and had their time completely wasted.

#TheMandalorianAndGrogu is a grin-inducing crowd-pleaser that puts Star Wars back on theatrical track. Director Jon Favreau is (again) a safe pair of hands that deliver a solid, thrilling and engaging romp. A solid popcorn movie that is the summer blockbuster you’re looking for.

@ManaByte Star Wars was nominated for best picture you doofus, and Empire was even better.

George Lucas created Star Wars to be a homage to the pulpy Flash Gordon Saturday afternoon serials, and yes he intended it for kids. That’s the Star Wars movie Jon Favreau made, and some “critics” are mad that it’s not Oppenheimer.

#TheMandalorianAndGrogu is fun. A cool action flick with Mandalorian kicking tons of ass. However, as a Star Wars movie it doesn’t quite clear the bar of the quality one would come to expect from a Star Wars film. It still feels a little too tv. I wanted slightly more.

@mdburnell Cavill has just been around too long at this point. They’re not hiring the guy who was replaced as Superman to play Bond. It’s entirely too much baggage.

@GoIrish7310 The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Ungentlemanly Warfare were both fantastic and Cavill great in them, but both were poorly marketed and bombed because of it. US studios just don't get Guy Ritchie. Argylle was horrific because it was a parody of a parody that forgot to be funny.

I know in my heart that Amazon will botch this but I just want to see James Bond set in the era it was written. Bond does not work in an era of drones and cyber warfare. I want hard drinking Cold War Bond. Ideally starting with Royal Navy Bond. Bring me Henry Cavill.
