The Yangtze River has experienced a significant decline in biodiversity since the 1980s, mainly due to overfishing and water pollution. To address this, China introduced a 10-year fishing ban across the entire Yangtze River basin starting on Jan 1, 2021. These are not actually “new” species. Many of them have always existed in the Yangtze but have become rare or disappeared from sight due to ecological pressure. With the fishing ban in place, the river’s ecosystem is gradually recovering, allowing these species to return, reproduce, and become visible again.
