We are still in a very small sample size.
There have been near-misses that would significantly change the narrative.
It could be portal/NIL, but I think we need deeper analysis and we probably should be talking more about how conference realignment weakened mid majors.

Not only are there just four double-digit seeds left, not only did all favorites win yesterday, the games haven’t been particularly close. Per ESPN Research, the average margin of victory in the first round was 17.4 points, the highest since the tournament expanded in 1985.

Among those who’ve gained ground in the St. Bonaventure search: Santa Clara associate HC Jason Ludwig, source told @TheFieldOf68. The Bonnies have been drilling down on coaches with programs who’ve excelled in the portal/NIL era — with a focus on evaluation, player development, retention, modern-style of play and winning with comparatively modest resources. Santa Clara has been about as good as anyone in that aspect and Ludwig has been a major reason why.

Mid-Majors (exlucidng the likes of Gonzaga and Houston) compared to middling power teams (within 2 games of .500 in conf. play) and their results:
Sweet 16: dead lock at 45

@JeremyWGR I think he’s pretty good. I believe that coaching and scheme were a bigger reason for our inability to generate pressure rather than talent. He will have more sacks next year than Rousseau.
