Collaborative (pair, ensemble) programming is not slower, as some seem to think. Laurie Williams did several formal studies on this issue, finding that the pair worked about 10% slower than two people working individually (not the 50% that most assume), but the code quality was so much better that the 10% was easily countered by less debugging time and easier maintenance. Mob/Ensemble programming (where 4 people work and one person takes notes in code) seems to be much faster. The team as a whole gets more work done than it used to. This is more anectdotal, though that‘s what I’ve experience personally.
