@RichardJMurphy Gas does not set the price of electricity. Gas only sets the wholesale price of electricity. You made a key error right away.

@Keir_Starmer Tolerating Islam, overlooking noncing, indulging a truant, prioritising foreigners, mourning ayatollahs, subjugating your country to the EU. They are not British values: they're the values of a comprised cuck.

Nonsense 1. There is no global price 2. Imports displace LNG, the most expensive gas source and reduces the frequency with which it sets the price therefore cutting imports absolutely will cut prices and therefore bills 3. We earn significant taxes on our own production, plus through the major supply chains supporting it. The additional taxes could be used to cut bills eg by moving more policy costs to taxation or to fund cuts to the fuel duty It's just not true that increasing our production wouldn't save us "a single penny" And some new production eg tiebacks can come on pretty quickly

Ratcliffe is incoherent - all of the oil and gas we produce here in Britain is sold at the global market price. No amount of oil produced here can in that case save us a single penny. Importing fossil fuels does not mean we pay more. Drilling in the north sea will take years to deliver globally priced fossil fuels and Rosebank will cost nearly £3 Bn in tax payer subsidies to it’s Norwegian owners - and….none of the oil will land here in Britain. So what sense is Ratcliffe making here, other than to shareholders in Rosebank and other oil companies. This is another fossil fuel crisis and we can’t solve it or help ourselves at all - by pouring more oil onto it. telegraph.co.uk/business/2026/…

The North Sea is already fully exploited. It makes no difference whether Norway Equinor or another big foreign oil company pump it out, it’s the same price for uk bill payers!! @Conservatives and @reformparty_uk pretending anything different are fooling you!!

@colinwalker79 We’d immediately generate more tax revenue from drilling our own. This could be used to reduce the import and processing costs of gas, LNG, oil from overseas.

@AndyFitchet Minimum wage is useless if your employer lays you off because of Labour policy towards businesses. You’ve seen unemployment figures, right?

In April, energy prices will come *down* £117 a year and minimum wage will go *up* £950 a year. Making someone on minimum wage £1067 a year better off. This Labour govt, like all govt’s, has made mistakes but not doing enough to tackle the cost of living isn’t one of them.

@lancelachlan 2/3 of our consumer price is renewables subsidies and taxes. Gas only affects the wholesale market price and the wholesale price is only 1/3 of the actual cost to the consumer

Britain’s electricity is expensive because our power prices are still tied to gas. Gas share of electricity: UK: ~35–40% Germany: ~12–15% Spain: ~15–20% France: ~6–7% When gas prices spike, UK electricity prices spike too. Countries with more nuclear and renewables aren’t exposed the same way. We built a system where the most expensive fuel sets the price.

@KateFantom Oh come on. Volatility is caused by geopolitical factors / wars. Pump prices have been static for months and months. What is volatile is daily wholesale electricity price in the U.K.depending on how windy and sunny it is, including negative prices which are not a good thing

Fossil fuel generated electricity can never lower our emissions as renewables do. As we’ve reduced our reliance on volatile fossil fuels our emissions have lowered significantly. Burning fossil fuels means volatile prices at the pump, on your bills and higher emissions. Annually air pollution alone causes an estimated 7.9 million deaths globally with cumulative costs to the NHS from 2017–2025 projected at £1.6 billion….. Burning fossil fuels kills - Fact

If you invented a machine that could: - Restore degraded land - Build topsoil - Sequester carbon - Produce fertiliser - Create complete protein - Generate its own fuel - Reproduce itself - Require zero electricity You'd win the Nobel peace prize. Instead, we blame them for climate change. These cows will be tending to their fields as they always have, while city-based career politicians discuss their impact on national climate agenda.
