@IchbinHussite @utilitaryan you have to consider how much of their essays are "shitposting" in the sense of less polemic attitude and more of a projection of their rhetorical talent. I believe most of Plut. essays on philosophical doctrines (Epicureans, Stoics) are of the same nature.

@utilitaryan I like that these guys would take some time off from serious debates to just shitpost on occasion.

Dio Chrysostom wrote a praise of hair in the 1st century. Three centuries later, Norwood patriot Synesius answered with his own “Eulogy of Baldness”, arguing that hairiness correlates with stupidity, whilst bald heads are geometric perfections and baldness itself a form of purity

Dion Chrysostom, 7.116 "Euboicus" I'd like an opinion from my fellow classicists, certainly better than I, today in class we discussed at length whether Dion is implicitly attributing this verse of the Msrgites to Hesiod, despite knowing (Disc.53)it was a homeric work. Thoughts?

@cor_marine Most AG editions in Greece come with a translation. Teubner and other stereotype editions are hard to get. I personally don't think he knows a bit of AG, but there are better ways to pull this.

@God12Lil it's plainly embarrassing to say that youre reading from the original text but nonetheless read with a translation

@sentantiq The matter dissolved after Parry and Analytics are still in shambles. Schadenwaldt believes it since having a poet has the interpretative value of emulation. A "Homer" did exist. It used to be important for the sole reason that ph*lologists tried to disprove his existence.

well, it's complicated. on the one hand, no we shouldn't obsess over translator's chocies on the other, the oral tradition has been a more or less fixed text for 2000 years
Jared Henderson@jhendersonYT

If we assume the Odyssey was not the work of one person, but rather an oral tradition that would change the story across tellings (which I think is a widely held view in classics?), then should we obsess over the specific choices of a translator?

@mimiche1er @sentantiq It's not, even in this context. It does not do justice to the formulaic πολύμητις. I personally wouldn't go into a ramble about how "it's the worst thing ever", but then again I don't see a point defending it either. Modesty is key.

@God12Lil @sentantiq "Lying", in this context, is in fact a good translation of "πολύμητις". You may not like it, you may prefer other translations, but still it is a good translation.

John Malala on Helen of Troy. «Helen was well grown, with a good figure and good breasts; she was white as snow, with good eyebrows, a good nose, good features, curly fairish hair, and large eyes; she was charming, with a lovely voice, and was a tremendous sight among women. She was 26 years old.»

Να τον έχεις κάνει φολοου για να δεις αν τελικά έριξε μουνί στην εκκλησία και αντ' αυτού να διαβάζεις θρησκευτικοεθνολογικές κρίσεις του κώλου... τραγικό farming...

Of all muslims, I probably despise Balkan and Anatolian muslims the most, and I probably respect North Caucasus muslims the most. Two sets of muslims that just happen to be European. One I think are scum, the other I think are honorable.
