The iambic pentameter and, for the Odyssey, the same line count are part of Wilson’s translation skopos. Criticisms that ignore this are incompetent. While her skopos means a lot won’t get translated or get translated super precisely, it does mean that her Odyssey is well paced.

these people never comment on wilson's decision to stick to iambic pentameter and the same number of lines as the original. several criticisms they peddle can be explained by this.

Published translations aren't meant to be a pure addition of translation of term, you can't just translat a word, translate the next and put them together. You have to decide a skopos. idk if you know ancient greek, but don't treat a published translation as a student copy. They

Disagreeing on how to translate something and having a debate is part of what makes translating literature so enjoyable.
Calling a translation choice you disagree with "outright evil" is unhinged.

Probably the most outrageous mistranslation by Emily Wilson is found in Book XXIV, line 303. Wilson translates: "Lying Odysseus replied, 'I will tell you the truth completely.'" Wilson misrepresents the meaning of πολύμητις. Murray for example translates this as "of many wiles", which is also a bit misleading. But to translate πολύμητις as lying is outright evil. πολύμητις is reminiscent of πολύτροπον in Book I, line 1. πολύμητις means to be thoughtful, circumspect, in many ways and in this way cunning.

@God12Lil @sentantiq πολύμητις works as an antithesis of ἀτρεκέως in these verses. It works because Odysseus is INDEED lying. I prefer other translations that do justice to the formulaic, as you say urself. I'm not saying that's the best translation, but it's a good and valid translation 1/2

@God12Lil @sentantiq "Lying", in this context, is in fact a good translation of "πολύμητις". You may not like it, you may prefer other translations, but still it is a good translation.

@mimiche1er @sentantiq Lying as πολύμητις is horrendous tho. The best thing about this discourse is that the right wings are dumb people who don't have knowledge on the subject while the left wings, whereas their knowledge is superior, don't want to use it properly for one reason

Christopher Nolan chose Wilson’s 2017 translation of Odyssey, one of the worst translations with a clear feminist woke agenda and a strong emphasis on the women in the Greek poem. Emily chose the "Ladies in Blue" for her cover, a Minoan fresco that has nothing to do with Odyssey

J’appartiens à une génération qui ne devrait pas oublier que le PS c’est l’abolition de la peine de mort, la 5e semaine de congés payés, les 35h, le mariage pour tous, la CMU, le repas à 1€ pour les étudiants. Une gauche de transformation sera toujours plus utile qu’une gauche de l’incantation. Agiter la haine du PS n’aboutira sur aucun bilan.
