Federal Government moves to begin voluntary repatriation of Nigerians from South Africa following xenophobic att@cks
The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Ojukwu, has confirmed that the Federal Government is closely monitoring the situation in South Africa following recent xenophobic att@cks and remains fully committed to the safety and welfare of Nigerian citizens.
“The safety and security of Nigerians abroad remains our highest priority,” the Minister stated, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed immediate action to support affected nationals.
She announced that arrangements are underway for voluntary repatriation flights to assist stranded and irregular Nigerian nationals who wish to return home safely. “So far, about 130 applicants have registered with our Mission in South Africa, and this number is expected to increase as engagement continues,” she said.
Amb. Ojukwu acknowledged the cooperation of Nigerian associations in South Africa, who are working closely with the Mission to ensure proper coordination and documentation of affected citizens.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s historical contribution to South Africa’s liberation, she stated, “Nigeria made great sacrifices towards the liberation struggle of South Africa, and this history must be properly understood by younger generations.”
She expressed concern over recurring xenophobic vi%lence, stressing that Nigerian lives and businesses must not continue to be end@ngered. “We are deeply concerned about this repetitive wave of xenophobic att@cks, which often resurface during political periods. This is unacceptable,” she added.
