Been working remotely at a startup for the last 2 months, but I barely write code from scratch. Most of my work is understanding an existing backend codebase and making changes. Sometimes I wonder how I'd perform in a JavaScript/backend interview tomorrow.

@GoelByte That's where side projects come in. A mistake I'll never make again is abandoning personal projects when working for someone. On my own I've learnt Linux, Docker, setting up and managing a VPS, CI/CD etc. Things that working at a company with an existing setup cannot afford me.

Getting the feeling that companies now are not as bullish or as aggressive about AI as they were a few months ago. Looks like the following things have compounded enough and have gone out of bounds. - unnecessarily sloppy code - unreliability in systems - rising token costs - agents breaking outside happy paths - products not delivering enough value Markets being this volatile and engineers not caring enough about systems is not helping either. Companies might be realizing that AI is a great assistant and aid, and that the narrative around it replacing "everything" was an oversell and an overestimation. Or maybe I am reading it all wrong :)

In the last 8 months, I've interned at 3 startups. Left the first after 2 months because the work wasn't the right fit. The next two were AI/backend-focused, but neither converted into a full-time role. Pata nahi kiski nazar lag gayi hai.

Assembly gave way to C, then C++, Java, Python, JavaScript... Every generation raised the level of abstraction and made building software easier. AI feels like the next abstraction layer. The only difference? This transition is happening 10x faster than any before it.

Now I think these days are good too.

Everyone says, "Move faster with AI. Ship more. Build projects." At the same time, everyone says, "Deep domain knowledge is what really matters." So now I'm expected to build everything with AI and understand every line as if I wrote it myself. What a time to be a developer.

Please don't tell me that, in a couple of years, nobody will care about the underlying language anymore. That the only thing that matters is whether you can deliver the right outcome in a scalable, maintainable, and reliable way.

Let’s break it down honestly: • You’re paying ₹4.25L upfront • Average salary: ~₹1.5L/month • 18 people didn’t get placed So basically: You’re taking a ₹4L risk hoping you’ll be in the “60”, not the “18”. And here’s the uncomfortable truth: The same skills (DSA, development, system design) are available: – Free on YouTube – Low cost on platforms like courses & bootcamps – Through self-learning + consistency What are you actually paying ₹4L for? • Discipline • Environment • Peer pressure • Mentorship Not guaranteed success. Talk to people who joined similar programs: Some will say: “Best decision of my life, got direction.” Others will say: “Could’ve done the same with self-study and saved lakhs.” So before joining, ask yourself: Do I lack resources… or do I lack consistency? Because if it’s consistency, no ₹4L course can fix that permanently. Spend wisely. Don’t outsource your hard work.

Meet yournishaant (2.2M followers) Came across a reel where he was saying things like “MongoDB use karne wale ladke 🤡” and telling people not to use MongoDB Without explaining that there is no best DB it depends on the use case. Learn both SQL and NoSQL. Drops 1-minute reels about “comment for link” content. Comments full of: “Link 🔗” Meanwhile, someone asks a genuine technical question… and there’s no answer. At this point, you could literally follow better technical creators who actually solve real problems. Honestly… who is learning from this? 🤔

I’m not sure how to improve — I’ve been stuck at this stage for months.

solve 5 dsa questions in a day, still feels unproductive. haven’t touched dev, and somewhere it feels like i’m not on the right track. dsa matters — not just for jobs, but to think better as an engineer… still figuring the balance.
