That’s one of the great ironies of A Song of Ice and Fire.
The House Targaryen were never among the most powerful dragonlord families in Valyria. They were respected, but they weren’t one of the ruling elite.
Everything changed because of three key events:
🐉 Daenys Targaryen foresaw the Doom of Valyria, prompting her family to leave for Dragonstone about 12 years before the catastrophe.
💥 When the Doom destroyed Valyria, nearly every other dragonlord family perished. The Targaryens survived simply because they had already left.
👑 A century later, Aegon I Targaryen used three dragons especially Balerion to conquer most of Westeros, where no kingdom possessed dragons to oppose him.
So the Targaryens didn’t become more powerful than the other Valyrian dragon lords they outlived them.
In Valyria, they were a minor dragonlord house. After the Doom, they became one of the last surviving dragonlord families in the world. Survival, not superiority, is what made them kings.

Daemon Targaryen is Aemond Targaryen’s paternal uncle, as Daemon is the younger brother of Viserys I Targaryen.
When Daemon married Rhaenyra Targaryen (Aemond’s half-sister), he also became Aemond’s brother-in-law by marriage.
In Westeros, however, blood relationships generally take precedence over relationships created by marriage. So calling Daemon “uncle” is both accurate and the more natural form of address.
