🏴🇬🇧 Before 1830, nobody had a lawn.
The rich had their grass cut by scythemen. Ordinary people had no garden worth speaking of.
Edwin Budding was an engineer in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Working in a textile mill, he noticed a machine using a cutting cylinder to trim the surface of cloth.
He looked at it.
And thought about grass.
He built a machine with a cutting cylinder mounted on a wheeled frame. Then pushed it across his garden at midnight. At midnight. So the neighbours wouldn't see.
It worked.
He patented it in August 1830.
Within twenty years the Victorian suburb was born. The striped lawn. The neat garden. The Sunday morning ritual.
Every suburban garden in America. Every cricket ground. Every football pitch. Every golf course on earth.
Traces back to one man. In Stroud. With a cloth machine. At midnight.
Right now, somewhere in the world, someone is cutting their grass. And they have no idea who Edwin Budding was.

@K4rmaRules @LazyLabourOut @NationCymru @joseph_carterUK @ShiptonMartin Oh, so not the Conservatives and Reform them? Make up your mind.
English

A leading financial think tank has ridiculed the Welsh Conservatives’ idea of scrapping the increase in the number of Senedd Members, saying it would save no more than a ‘rounding error’ in the devolved budget ✍️@ShiptonMartin wp.me/p8Mk4U-1gn3
English

@LazyLabourOut @K4rmaRules @NationCymru @joseph_carterUK @ShiptonMartin Bigger problem is the Welsh Nationalists in Labour, surely?
English

@K4rmaRules @GoodwayCardiff @NationCymru @joseph_carterUK @ShiptonMartin And The British Nationalists in Labour
English

@K4rmaRules @NationCymru @joseph_carterUK @ShiptonMartin But we don’t have to work hard to achieve that,do we. We have to work hard to get the Government is right for Wales. And that has to be Labour.
English

@K4rmaRules @NationCymru @joseph_carterUK @ShiptonMartin Not sure I understand that assertion, bearing in mind neither of them has been in power in Wales, like never.
English

@GoodwayCardiff @NationCymru @joseph_carterUK @ShiptonMartin We'd solve a multitude of problems by getting rid of the Conservatives and Reform.
English

@JennyRathbone We shouldn’t rely on electoral systems to defeat our opponents. We need to do so on the strength of our policies and our arguments and, if we can’t do that, then we deserve to lose.

Agree - ‘’I am far from certain that Rayner would defeat either Starmer or Streeting.’’ In fact I’d go further it will be idiotic to have a leadership contest.

@swanseagds @ITVWales Was it the full register that was examined? You can opt for your name to be excluded from the published register.
English

@ITVWales Let's see the proof. A search indicated he was not in the register in December 2025 .

Reform’s new leader in Wales proves he is eligible to vote in the country ahead of Senedd Elections itv.com/news/wales/202…
English

@lukeakehurst And that would certainly improve our electoral prospects , wouldn’t it? Where did we get these idiots?. How do they ever get on to the panel of candidates?
English

Amazing that some colleagues don't seem to have noticed what did or didn't happen today.
There was an attempted leadership coup. It failed.
Continuing to call for the PM to go when he has just been cheered to the rafters by the PLP (at least so I hear, I'm on a train back from Gorton so wasn't there), and when it came to the crunch and no one was actually up for standing against him, is just destructive to Labour's chances in the byelection and in May.
As Clem told Laski: "a period of silence on your part would be welcome".
Kit Bradshaw@kitbradshaw
NEW: Labour MP Peter Lamb calls on Sir Keir Starmer to do the “responsible thing” and set out a “timetable for departure in May”. The Crawley MP tells me this would allow the party to “get on with electing a new leader”. @itvmeridian
English

@markjhooper No Labour candidate ? And to think. We used to hold that seat on the county council.

Share this to save his life.
If you make him famous, the Iranian regime might not execute him tomorrow.

@RhonddaBryant Last week we wanted to choose who represented them in debates. Now we criticise them when they don’t turn up. If they can’t choose their spokesperson, I don’t blame them for being a no show. Additionally, they’ve probably worked out that nobody watches or listens to these events.
English

@Jeffrey62093861 You can’t expect Labour MPs to break their holiday to support their leader at such a critical time. Would be wholly unfair.
English

@LibDemDavid @joseph_carterUK @JamesEvansMS So you favour maintaining managers and bureaucrats over front line clinicians in primary and secondary care. I’m not convinced those clinicians would agree with you.
English

Utter drivel from @JamesEvansMS. How long has he been health spokesperson? All he can say is let’s cut managers and bureaucracy. No sense of someone who understands the system. 1 reason wales is failing so badly is because we’ve had such an awful opposition for the past 5 years.
English

@Jeffrey62093861 @elliereeves Could not agree more, Jeff. But, as I’ve said for years, our party is now a middle class party which couldn’t care a toss for our traditional voters.
English

@elliereeves Personally as a socialist I would prefer £570 m to be spent on the children who arrive in school in nappies.
English

@ShiptonMartin @SeneddWaste What do your paymasters stand for these days, Martin?
English

@SeneddWaste Unlike your paymasters in Reform, the majority of law-abiding Welsh people do not support Israel’s crimes against humanity in Palestine.
English

Every single Plaid MP signed this.
Teaming up with Corbyn to stand up for criminals over law abiding Welsh people.
Jeremy Corbyn@jeremycorbyn
More than 50 MPs and Peers have joined me in urging David Lammy to immediately meet with the lawyers of those on hunger strike. The government needs to wake up, take responsibility, and show some humanity before it is too late.
English

@lukejcr Any idea how many middle class students will benefit from this compared to working class ?
