@GordonFielden @JLPartnersPolls @TheSun It certainly smacks of an attempt to shape opinion rather than reflect it. The only opinion that counts is voting members - and even then I'd suggest it's really difficult to model an accurate result from a sample.

@JLPartnersPolls @TheSun It is a Sun poll of 3,000 people, not Labour Party members. It reflects the paper’s preference and narrative, not who the party would choose. No one knows who was actually in that sample, so it tells us nothing about what Labour members will do.

@NicholasTyrone Ambiguity is strength. Apparently. What bugs me is the media's inability to nail down his policy positions.

I could genuinely not tell you what Andy Burnham’s position on Britain’s relationship with the European Union is, nor what voting system he thinks we should ideally have for electing members of the House of Commons

@PippaCrerar Wasn't he reported, just a few days ago saying he didn't support PR but was supportive of AV? There's either a lack of consistency in his pledges, or the news media are misreporting him.

- Burnham commits to Labour manifesto pledges on spending and taxation - but if he was PM he'd reprioritise large sums of money (incl devoting all of a £39bn fund for affordable housing to council homes rather than allocating any to private developers). - reiterates broad support for immigration changes spearheaded by Shabana Mahmood - but indicates some changes, particularly on rules about ILR, saying he's aware some Labour MPs worry about this. - commits to promising a proportional electoral system in its next manifesto - adding that it was not practical to change way people voted before next election.

Andy Burnham has formally launched his campaign for the Makerfield byelection with a barely coded pitch for Downing Street, saying a vote for him to become the MP there was “a vote to change Labour” - @peterwalker99 reports theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

@tomhfh I think this is one of those moments where it’s better to be kind, Tom. If you don’t know what is going on in someone’s life, it’s sometimes better to take what they say at face value and give them the time and space they need.

Britain's smallest (and most unlikely?) Nuclear 'bomber', the tiny ship-borne Westland Wasp helicopter. This Royal Navy Wasp is carrying a WE.177 tactical nuclear bomb that was in service from the 1960s to the 1990s.

That would only be the case if people were focussing on current, relatively low, immigration stats. As far as I can see, there is no let up in politicians and others blaming immigration for their problems. And maybe it's more reflective of other areas (economy, NHS, etc) becoming lass salient. Whatever it is, it doesn't necessarily read like government failure.

One way or another immigration being sharply down yet the salience of immigration being very high is a major failure for the current government.

New from @Ipsos_in_the_UK today. Immigration returns to the top of our Issues Index as the most important issue facing the country. Will today's figures lead to a shift?

For those who think Labour are rubbish at communicating the real effect of their policies. Positive policy announcement Nobody reads it, or listens to the Commons Statement It's reported negatively A minister tries to correct It continues to be reported incorrectly, over and over Not just online, but mainstream TV and Print news And days later, everybody believes the lie.

Según la Comisión Europea, la guerra de Irán reducirá el crecimiento de todas las grandes economías. De todas, menos de España, que en 2026 crecerá casi tres veces más que la eurozona. Innovación. Energías renovables. Talento y condiciones laborales dignas. Nuestro modelo funciona. Y el mundo lo sabe. SEGUIMOS 💪🏻

Whenever I hear some radical(?) proposal from politicians, I always ask "What to other countries do?" Across Europe, the UK is currently mid table. - People often want to compare the UK with Nordics where CGT is mid 30s% - Ireland doesn't suffer from a lack of inward investment (see also GDP/capita) with a rate of 33% - In the graphic CH is listed as 0%, but Cantons apply up to normal income tax rates as part of their devolved Wealth Tax regime. There is a debate to be had in the UK about how wealth is taxed, but without seeing the detail of Streeting's brain fart - thresholds, exemptions and all the other picky details like how it relates to other taxes - it's impossible to judge how effective or destructive his proposal would be. Of course, politically, it's a gift to right wing noise generators. But what isn't?

Given room for uncertainty wrt vote transfers, this is how 2024 could've looked under STV 🟥 LAB: 266 - 282 🟦 CON: 159 - 168 🟧 LDM: 66 - 82 ➡️ RFM: 63 - 76 🟩 GRN: 17 - 29 🟨 SNP: ~16 🔲 PLC: ~5 Roughly an 88% match between share of votes & share of seats

@dave43law However, if as expected he becomes PM, the news media will fill column inches and air time telling us what a terrible (and illegitimate) PM is his. This won't let up until after an early GE is called. I imagine the Independent will run with the pack in this regard.

You can't compare raw numbers with Germany. You have to compare the UK to its EU member analogue. There is no doubt that making the bulk of your trade more difficult and costly, whilst increasing civil servant numbers because you lost shared resources, is a drag on UK productivity. And remember, the EU lost a population of 70m within its internal market. That didn't come for free either.

🚨 Starmer says Brexit made Britain poorer. But the GDP data tells a more awkward story. Since the Brexit vote: UK real GDP: +12.1% Germany real GDP: +6.0% Britain is not booming. Nobody serious should pretend it is. But Europe’s supposed economic engine has grown at barely half the UK’s rate. So why is Starmer’s big answer still more Europe? This wasn’t a reset. It was a relapse: more Brexit blame, more Brussels, more excuses. No wonder voters are walking away from Labour.

People promising to take us back into the EU are lying to you. It cannot be achieved in less than a period of years. And, mark this well, IT IS NOT IN OUR GIFT ! Starmer is moving as fast as is possible already to create the platform upon which the future possibility depends.

I cannot believe anyone is seriously arguing for the Greens not to run against Burnham in Makerfield. The GPEW is not a faction of the Labour Party - we are a political force here to win, as G&D showed! If Reform takes the seat, that's Labour's fault on any number of levels.
Stats for Lefties 🍉🏳️‍⚧️@LeftieStats

🚨NEW | Greens confirm they will contest Makerfield. Despite Caroline Lucas urging the party to step aside and endorse Starmer's Labour Party, a Green spokesperson said the selection process has begun. "We've shown we can beat Reform" they added. (Via @Telegraph)
