Everyone in the comments has the same rebuttal: if you can’t afford to tip, don’t eat out. Why is mandatory tipping just relegated to the food industry? Why don’t you tip the guy who changed your oil at the dealership? Why don’t you tip your UPS or USPS or Amazon driver when they deliver mail or packages? Why don’t you tip the cashier at the grocery or big box store? Why don’t you tip flight attendants? Why don’t you tip the worker who mixed your paint at Home Depot? Some are paid a salary some work hourly. What’s the difference?

Somewhere along the way, it shifted into an expectation that can feel detached from the actual experience. Everyone comes in with different circumstances, different standards, and different limits.
