I’m outside Johnson Hall, where more than 50 people have gathered this morning to deliver a petition to University of Oregon administration and rally against potential cuts coming to the university.

He mentions that the University Senate’s executive committee will convene at noon today via Zoom for an emergency meeting. Scholz and Provost Chris Long will be there, Urbancic says.

Mike Urbancic, who runs external relations for UA’s executive council, announces that the petition delivery team didn’t get an audience with President Karl Scholz inside Johnson Hall. “This isn’t the end of what we’re doing,” he says.

As opposition over potential cuts has intensified, the university has maintained that budget reduction plans are not finalized.

“When UO workers are under attack, what do we do? Stand up fight back! When the institution of tenure is under attack, what do we do? Stand up fight back!” is one of the crowd’s prepared chants.

Some union members just went inside Johnson Hall, an administrative building, to deliver a petition against the potential cuts, which has over 2,600 signatures. The audience is chanting in support.

UO’s faculty union, United Academics of the University of Oregon, organized the rally. Cuts, including potential program eliminations and layoffs of tenured faculty, are expected to roll out the week of Sept. 7 due to the university’s projected budget gap.
