I think it’s fair to say that “socialism” describes at a bare minimum some level of commitment to the abolition of capitalism. Otherwise, the term “social democracy” is perfectly serviceable.

@CodyDad420 Definitions of socialism that do not include the intention of abolishing capitalism have not been relevant or politically useful for quite some time now, especially since the European countries being invoked do not even describe themselves as socialist.

Democratic Socialists like @aoc and @NYCMayor do not believe what Democratic Socialist countries throughout the world do. In fact it’s a stupid name for the party. They aren’t socialists. They believe in social democracy similar to Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. These countries are capitalists. They just realize that income disparity can’t keep getting greater without society helping those who can’t afford healthcare, childcare and retirement. They should rename themselves “social democrats.”

Crazy that this was sent from NYCDSA’s treasurer to all NPC members after the vote yesterday. Openly threatening a split with a detailed breakdown of how it would go, a breakdown that I have to assume wasn’t made immediately after the vote. Seems like this is their actual plan.
