As we enter winter 🥶, this is a reminder that utility disconnection protections are rife with administrative burdens, or obstacles, that make it more difficult for vulnerable households to keep their power on as temperatures drop, heating demands rise, and related bills rise.
David Pomerantz@DavidPomerantz

Vermont doesn't allow utilities to disconnect folks' power in winter👍🏻 ...as long as it's 10° or lower(!)🥶 The threshold rises to 32° for houses w/ older folks, as long as the account holder "furnishes advance written notice to the utility." As I'm sure everyone knows to do.😡

New paper 🔥 We find hot weather leads to low-income households to be disconnected two to three months later. Evidence that higher energy bills leads to this delayed financial distress nature.com/articles/s4156…

I don't know who needs to see this today, but I remember feeling so demoralized on Fridays because I knew the weekend would be as much - if not more - work because I was taking care of tiny humans who never slept. I see you. And you will get weekends back. @Momademia

In this new open access article, we find that the majority of households that face conditions of energy poverty/insecurity, tend to do so on a reoccurring basis. We must think deeply about preventative solutions, debt asst, and implications of dis/reconnection fees, plus more
David Konisky@DavidKonisky

This work, with @CarleySanya @GraffMichelle @MemmottTrevor, continues our efforts to document and understand household energy insecurity among low-income households in the United States.
