For the first time tonight, the number of children attending Epsom Junior Chess Club on Thursday evenings reached 90 pupils. The thirst for #chess among juniors in our area is staggering and the latest talent just keeps rolling off the production line and into our adult teams.

@cheamhigh you need to teach your pupils to move down the bus. All standing in the middle and not moving. Preventing passengers getting on. Most only going to Cheam village so could easily have walked.

FIDE has recognised Peter with a Certificate of Appreciation for his incredible voluntary work bringing chess into prisons. Since 2017, he’s set up clubs in 20 prisons, using chess to support rehabilitation.

Our priorities are fixing the fault, getting water to our most vulnerable customers, and providing bottled water (as detailed below). If you have another query, it will be addressed once supplies have been restored.
Available Bottled Water Stations:
There are four bottled water stations available, at the following locations:
👉 Cheam Library Car Park, Church Rd, Sutton SM3 8QH. Access via Park Rd.
👉 Bourne Hall in Ewell, KT17 1UG. Access via Spring St.
👉 Upper High Street Car Park KT17 4DU. Access via Upper High Street main road.
👉 Westcroft Leisure Centre, along Westcroft Rd in Carshalton, SM5 2TG.

@LukeTaylorLD Not everyone has a car. Without one getting water is not feasible for many, not just the vulnerable. They need to be arranging for it to be delivered.

Glad to see a water collection point open in Cheam finally at Cheam Library, Church Rd, Sutton SM3 8QH.
This will remain open throughout the night for residents to collect water.
Please do share with neighbours, and I will continue to push SES for a permanent fix.

@richtwickchess @PaulBarasi Off the record, and speaking personally, we could do with a much larger venue. Lovely pub and lovely room, but we can only get at most 14 boards there: we really need room for at least 20. When we have 2 6-board matches we have to advise our social players not to come.

Our last meeting of 2024 sees us playing Harrow in the Thames Valley KO Cup and Wimbledon in the Ellery Williams Trophy. There will be a few boards available for social chess as well.

@LukeTaylorLD Aren’t they supposed to provide a significant quantity of water to residents. Many are unable to visit bottle stations without transport, not just those that are vulnerable. Nothing from Sutton council either.

The situation in Sutton and Cheam today is simply not good enough, and deeply distressing for many.
I'm continuing to push SES to resolve the situation quickly - and in the meantime provide bottle stations that are actually *within* Sutton and Cheam.

@LukeTaylorLD Still no water in SM3. They seem to be assuming everyone can just drive to Epsom. What about those with no transport or unable to carry heavy weights.

SES say they have recovered water supplies and are stabilising the network - but storage levels remain low and “Customers may experience low pressure and no supply in some areas throughout today”

I have been informed by SES this afternoon of a fault at the Cheam Water Treatment Works that is leaving some facing complete loss of water supply.
I am monitoring the situation closely - please see my statement below for information about getting access to bottled water.
