@GlbalMadridista Poor journalism when you get such a fundamental thing wrong as the free kick that Argentina took that the keeper saved in the Cape Verde match. Did you even watch it?

@Pat_Healy_PD @_tjh96 Seems 50% of ex refs think it’s a pen & 50% don’t. Same with pundits. It’s very subjective & not clear & obvious to me. VAR should not get involved otherwise they are re-refereeing the game. I get the game changing part of the argument but it’s not clear cut & isn’t game changing

@Graham_J0 @_tjh96 I have no issue with the VAR getting involved Because, in my opinion, that was an error from the ref. It wasn't a penalty. And with such a game-changing decision involved, VAR was correct to be called into play.

@Pat_Healy_PD @_tjh96 My view is he’s saying it’s against the rules & hence not a penalty. My point is that is irrelevant as the ref gave it & VAR shouldn’t have got involved as it’s not a clear & obvious error. I do agree that sometimes they’re given & sometimes not, that’s the ref’s call not VAR

@VictoriaSask The chip in the ball didn’t detect it. The ref didn’t see it. VAR didn’t see it. End of! A Norwegian mathematician has analysed the trajectory & using the mathematical formula for a ball trajectory when kicked by a keeper & the camera footage with computer modelling says “no hit”

This was the most controversial decisions in modern soccer. The ball hit a camera cable, and the play should have been stopped. This is an objective rules error, not a bad call. Norway has the right to request a replay.

@theawayfans Of the three pictured - for this game, to replace Rice who is clearly shattered, it would have to be Gerrard. We have our Gazza in Jude. We have better than Rooney in Kane.

@piersmorgan @gabrielclarke05 No. He misquoted Tuchel. Then failed to understand the difference between Tuchel praising their mentality whilst saying the performance needs to be better. He then completely took it out of context when speaking to Jude & implied that the manager thought they were terrible

@MailSport So the mighty Clattenburg doesn’t know the rules either on VAR. Why is VAR getting involved when the onfield decision is a penalty? It’s not a clear & obvious mistake. If so, why are half the media ex-refs saying penalty & half are saying not. It should never have been overturned

@ToonFan14 All comments about if it was a pen or not are irrelevant & subjective. The actual issue is that the ref gave it & VAR intervened & re-refereed. It’s not a “clear & obvious” error so why get involved? The fact there’s so much divide on if it was one or not proves it’s not clear!

One of the most jarring things about trying to talk about football on here. People cannot speak honestly or without bias. And it’s tiresome. Spence knew what he was doing. It wasn’t a natural movement. And it wasn’t a penalty. Opinions would be different if at the other end.
Sam@FPLSportScience

Bemusing that stepping across the defender and protecting the ball is not awarded as a foul now if the defender knocks you over from behind. I am so glad that this didn't impact the result. Outstanding bit of play from Spence!

@mdudley1894 Whether he’s shielding it or putting his leg out to draw a foul (also perfectly legit) the actual issue is why VAR intervened? Ref gives a pen. There is massive debate on either side as to whether it’s a foul or not. In which case not clear & obvious so why has VAR got involved?

Shielding the ball and drawing the foul is totally legitimate. But that’s not what Spence was doing. It was obvious from the way he went to ground that he was more interested in initiating contact than retaining possession of the ball. A subtle but crucial difference.

@dohgallagher @oooooz48 @BowkerStu And the ref gave it as a penalty…….. The only question here is why VAR is re-refereeing the game when it is not “clear and obvious”. The ref was the closest person to the situation too. Disgraceful VAR interjection.

@oooooz48 @BowkerStu There is also guidance in ref training to consider whether or not the player has got their centre of gravity (ie their core) between the player and the ball. That is considered the difference between shielding and making a challenge (that and the ball being in playing distance).

This is where people that make the laws and enforce the laws that have never played football come unstuck! Spence is goalside of his defender he knows he’s coming across to to get a nick on the ball so he puts his leg across to shield the ball and the defender clatters him from behind yes Spence creates the contact but what’s he supposed to do just let the defender tackle him?? It’s actually very intelligent forward play! But yet again it’s all about opinions some of you will agree with me some of you won’t! So is that a clear and obvious error from the referee? VAR re refereeing games as per usual 🙄🙄🙄🙄
BBC Sport@BBCSport

The referee initially awarded England a penalty before reversing his decision and concluding there was no foul committed on Djed Spence. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Did you agree?🤔

Yesterday was one of the biggest scams I’ve seen in a game of football. Everything is rigged. Big teams to go through, it’s all scripted. So proud of our team, they fought to the end vs opponent and refs. Clearly deserved the win🇳🇴 What a World Cup team💪

@HACKETTREF Also - ref gave this on field. Why has VAR got involved at all to overturn it - it is not a clear and obvious error as proved by the fact there is such a divide on whether this was a foul in the first place. On that basis the on field ref decision should be the decision upheld

@mattletiss7 Matt I respect you on so many things but you’ve got this wrong. Spence put his leg across to protect the ball & got fouled, should have been a penalty. The Swiss guy plain dived & hung his leg out to get a clip. It’s total simulation by the Swiss guy & he deserves to be sent off

@JamesMelville Totally agree. Made worse by the compete attempt to misquote and disrupt Tuchel at the start about suggesting he’d said they’d have to suffer. For the bell ends in the studio to then praise both interviews is actually moronic.

Gabriel Clarke’s two interviews with Thomas Tuchel and Jude Bellingham were dreadful. Tuchel was very clear in his praise for England’s strength of character but he wasn’t happy with the performance. Clarke failed to understand Tuchel’s mentality comments. He then gave a misleading follow up to Bellingham which suggested to Bellingham that Tuchel was unhappy with the team. Unnecessarily disruptive and the wrong context of interviewing in two separate interviews. #EngvNor
