Once upon a time I thought I was going places. The photo shows one RAF and one Royal Navy aviator. The rest of us were policemen. Not a Walt but if I were ...

@HistoryExtra The best one in (my) living memory. All since have been useless and/or a disgrace to the office.

#OnThisDay in 1992, Betty Boothroyd became the first female Speaker of the House of Commons, breaking the 700-year-long tradition of solely male speakers.

@TonyPjames @omid9 Strange how the BBC was unable to report on the regime's repression a few months ago but now has so much content about the war's effects on ordinary Iranians despite the blackout. Anyone might think they are biased.
English

@omid9 The only thing matching this is the lack of coverage its getting across all our news outlets.
What's worse is while ignoring it they're giving platforms to regime representatives who are behind the blackout.

Now the longest any country has denied the majority of its population access to the worldwide web in history ⬇️
NetBlocks@netblocks
📵 #Iran's internet blackout is now entering its 47th day after 1104 hours without international connectivity for the general public. The measure continues to severely limit Iranians' ability to check on the safety of friends and loved ones across borders.

@chinnychick @ClarksonsFarm1 The police didn't have your rule 1. We had Never say"It's too quiet." The Q word was the equivalent of The Scottish Play.
English

@ClarksonsFarm1 The support helicopter fleet had 3 rules/advice..
1. Never pass fuel
2. Never pass food
3. Never pass porcelain (proper toilet)
Good rules to live by…there was a fourth but it’s too crude for on here 😆😜

@Councillorsuzie @LindsayHoyle_MP I miss Betty Boothroyd. Ever since they've been either useless or a disgrace to the office.
English

Oh there is always a tweet! Now what do you say @LindsayHoyle_MP ?
Robert Abel@rj_abel
Funny how the Speaker now says he “can’t” tell the PM to answer the question. Yet when Boris Johnson was in office, he did exactly that—on record. Same chair, different standards.
English

@BBCNews Funny how your reporting is dominated by the effect of the war on ordinary Iranians when the BBC failed so obviously to report the crackdown on the protests only weeks ago.

I have had a lightbulb moment. The two RAF bases on Cyprus are British Sovereign Territory. The government's inability and unwillingness to defend them must be a precursor to handing them back to Cyprus as they are clearly remnants of colonialism. Alternatively, transfer Akrotiri to the Navy, rename it HMS Akrotiri and hey presto we have a naval presence in the Med.
English

@Grayrayner I will read that as a collection of metaphors, for your protection, in case anyone (travellers?) claims to have suffered "alarm and distress".
English

@Sandford_Ambo @RAF_Luton Nonsense. The Canberra was on the ground.
English

@RAF_Luton It is rare we will correct the mighty @RAF_Luton but, on this occasion, we feel we must.
As the photo is clearly taken from below it must have been a from a Buccaneer.

I cannot hear of Haydn without thinking of the conversation in an old Goon Show.
GRYTPYPE-THYNNE: It's Moriarty, where are you?
MORIARTY: Here. In the piano
GRYTPYPE-THYNNE: What the devil are you doing in there
MORIARTY: I'm hidin'
GRYTPYPE-THYNNE: Don't be silly, Haydn's been dead for years.
English

After hearing yet another Haydn symphony for the first time last night @BirmCons (No.1 - even this is wonderful!), today I am reflecting once again that if more people spent more time listening to Haydn, the world would have far fewer problems.

@thetimes Maybe it was my GCE in geography that guided me to never buy a house on a flood plain!

@ITVRugby Why didn't your "studio" half time people understand when the ref was crystal clear on the implications?
English

@ITVRugby Why is the picture so dark? I have Sky Glass and there's no manual brightness control.

@JeremyClarkson @Jasyr007145259 Any chance you could persuade Amazon to make your PQ17 programme available to watch and/or buy? I bought the VC and Dieppe ones but can only see PQ17 on iPlayer.
English

@Jasyr007145259 I did a few of them. Check out the VC one

Thank you @JeremyClarkson
for this documentary I never knew existed and, more importantly, educating me about some of the heroes of WW2. True bravery. 🙏
