So here’s the path… WA state’s proposed “millionaires” tax is based on a static picture of wealth in the state, and the revenue forecasts assume that the taxable base won’t ever change. But the wealthiest individuals are far more mobile AND motivated to minimize taxes AND informed on how to do it, so they’ll leave. That’s actively happening. It’s not a threat, it’s a live action. That means actual revenue will be significantly lower than anticipated (marketed by politicians). That means the income threshold will eventually need to be lowered to something like $750k per year instead of $1M, which in turn continues the cycle of wealthy, mobile individuals moving out of state and revenue coming up short and the threshold being lowered and eventually the state will just have a full-blown income tax. Maybe it settles somewhere like $250k or $150k but this is the slippery slope to an income tax for the masses, not just the “mega rich millionaires and billionaires” like they want everyone to believe. Meanwhile, no other taxes will be repealed so WA residents will still face exceptionally high property taxes, painfully high sales tax, obnoxiously high vehicle registration taxes, and more.
