Two Syrian Groups Have Declared War On Israel Amidst Mass Protests Why could this be big news? First of all, if a Syrian war front could prove successful in anyway, this is the historic opportunity for it. But, for those who know a little bit about the dynamics, nothing is ever simple. The mass demonstrations ongoing inside Syria, began in Quneitra & Dara’a, in the country’s south, then began to spread, with people taking to the streets in areas of Hama yesterday. An armed group then publicly declared Jihad against Israel in the Dara’a countryside. Today, the demonstrations, called for in support of Palestinian prisoners who are threatened with execution, began to escalate. University students in Aleppo, residents of Homs, Damascus & elsewhere, all came out to protest. In the south of Syria, the people have been effectively abandoned as Israeli occupation forces continue to seize more territory, set up checkpoints, abduct civilians & cut access to water resources, along with power in some cases. The government in Damascus is evidently in the pocket of the United States, but Ahmed Al-Shara’a himself does not fully control the situation on the ground. The economy is still in the ground, despite the lifting of sanctions & reclaiming of the country’s oil and gas, along with its agricultural lands. In many areas, despite attempts to impose Damascus’s control, armed groups, tribal militias and local fighters carry their own arms. Damascus has agreed to a “joint fusion mechanism” with the Israelis, which was supposed to lead to joint economic endeavours as well as security coordination. But the Israelis are too busy capitalising on the weakness of the government, continuing to back Druze separatist militias & bomb it’s forces in an attempt to force a full disarmament of southern Syria, while it continues to steal more land- a similar project we see in Lebanon in many ways. So here is where things get interesting... If there can be an armed front waged by groups in southern Syria, who do so without the backing of Damascus, it could likely lead to a range of armed groups, even some who have aligned themselves with the HTS government, to join in. Although this is certainly not promised, there is a decent likelihood. At the end of the day, the majority of Syrian groups are ideologically vehemently opposed to Israel, even if they are part of groups that have aided their plots. The vast majority of the public are too. The real question here is whether they can manage to put up a real fight? The Syrian Arab Army’s military power was obliterated during the regime change transition, making it challenging to stand up to Israel effectively. However, due to the invasion of Lebanon, in addition to Israel’s airforce having to carry out operations across various fronts, there is an opportunity during this regional war for a Syrian armed front to be effective. If Syrian armed factions prove capable of actually putting up a sustained fight, this will prove absolutely devastating for the Israeli military. In the event they decide to then assassinate al-Shara’a, things could end up becoming even more difficult for them to navigate, as a power struggle would ensue. All of this assumes that the Syrians will indeed rise up against Israel. At this current moment in time, it is perhaps too early to call how this will go. But make no mistake, this is a historic opportunity that won’t likely present itself again.
