Just a fact-check on that fans apparently forcing their way in at Hillsborough The exit gates were opened at police direction to relieve overcrowding outside. This can be clearly seen on CCTV and footage is backed up by statements and oral evidence made by SWFC stewards and transcripts of police radio. Regrettably the lie told by the match commander about this on the day continues to be repeated, despite him withdrawing it the same day and apologising for it in the first public inquiry The overcrowding outside arose not because of ticketless fans but because his flawed planning had allocated only 7 turnstiles for 10,100 fans and they were never going to cope. This caused a dangerous crowd build up in a notorious bottleneck
