Last Thursday we took Laila to St Thomas' A&E to get assessed. She’d had her lowest blood sugar reading so far 2.6mmol/L (47mg/dL) and her blood pressure was borderline low. She wasn’t feeling well. The nurses were shocked to hear how low her blood sugars were and how long she had been on hunger strike for and took her into majors to be assessed. They ran blood tests, did an ECG and a chest X-ray. When they measured her blood sugar at the hospital it was 2.7mmol/L (49 mg/dL). The results came back and they told us her thyroid gland was better, but that her potassium was low, and that she still had swelling in her legs. They gave her a saline sodium injection to help with her blood pressure. The emergency doctor explained that a low or high potassium could affect her heart and circulation, and that it was good that we’d brought her in as it was borderline. They told her she needs food and glucose, and she refused. She was discharged later in the evening and sent home. They prescribed her potassium tablets to take three times a day. They said she needs to remain under observation, that there is no way to predict when a collapse could come. That there was no precedent for her situation. They told us to bring her in again if she feels any change or doesn't feel right. Since then, she’s feeling a little better but she’s visibly frailer. Her blood sugars continue to trend downwards. This morning’s readings: Weight: 58.9kg Blood sugar: 2.7mmol/L Blood pressure: 119/74 Pulse: 103 Day 132 of her hunger strike. 132 days since Alaa finished his sentence. Laila should not be having to put her body through this for her son's legal and human rights. @Keir_Starmer we do not know how much time we have. #FreeAlaa

On day 106 of her hunger strike, Laila is starting daily visits to Downing Street to remind Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer of the urgency to secure the release of her son Alaa from prison in Egypt. “I know that Mr. Starmer has written to President Sisi to request the release of my son Alaa, but at this stage of my hunger strike I cannot wait for an exchange of letters. I am running out of time. We have been lucky that my body has been resilient so far, but the British government should not waste this luck. We are getting closer and closer by the day to my collapse or hospitalisation." "I know Mr. Starmer can make this happen, but he needs to act now, before it is too late. I will not eat until Alaa is free.” Laila will sit outside Downing Street on Whitehall between 10am-11am each working day of the week until the health effects of her hunger strike mean she is unable to do so #FreeAlaa
