@tamforrester @MakeVotesMatter Currently reform are polling about 30% of votes...but that may (depending on distribution) get them more than 50% of seats. At the last GE it was the other way round, far higher vote share than seats. Any party CAN benefit by or be harmed by FPTP. It's a terrible system

First Past the Post is kind of exhausting, honestly 😣 Let's keep it simple. Let's make it proportional.

Election campaigns should be about debating ideas - not fighting over bar charts and conflicting tactical voting advice. People should be able to vote with hope, not to block the party they fear. If we don't want every election to look like Gorton & Denton, we must scrap FPTP.

Whatever the outcome of the Gorton&Denton byelection it looks like the majority of votes cast will be wasted, with the winner potentially winning with as little as 30% The need for proportional representation has never been greater. First Past the Post is broken @MakeVotesMatter

@Ferretgrove Absolutely. In case of interest, I've written a blog about this by election on my personal blog, mainly pointing out that, whatever the result, by elections like this one show up just how badly First past the post copes in the current electoral climate gregardan.wordpress.com/2026/02/24/gor…

@GregArdan80 Yeah. I wouldn’t normally stay up for a single by election but everyone seems to think that this is important. No matter what the result, all the main players will claim a victory of sorts.

I wonder how the long the Gorton and Denton by election count will take. I might stay up.

Introduced my little boy to the game Tetris. Found an online version almost identical to the 80s Gameboy original. Complete with the same uber catchy music! Obviously had to have a game or 3 myself too! Feeling VERY nostalgic! #80sChild

@Ferretgrove I don't think it's a measure of success myself. And absolutely you don't need to love them. But it can be a consequence of being an inspiring figure. How about zelenski? I imagine a huge number of Ukrainians would consider him a "loved" figure for leading the fight against russia

@GregArdan80 I don’t need to love politicians. I think it’s a bizarre measure of success.

Farage has stated that Starmer is ‘deeply unloved’ by his party. I find that rather telling. People should not love a party leader or a Prime Minister, that’s cult behaviour.

@ChristinaC21094 @EdwardJDavey The maths is that 105 is bigger than 104. Those are the full figures over the entirety of 2025 calendar year. The telegraph figures only include post 1 May, as the actual article itself makes clear but the telegraph headline is incorrect

@PaulTaylorIeng @LibDems To be honest the layout of the table is poor. But in any case the difference for all parties is the dates. The table shows post may 2025. The graphic shows calendar year. Reform did particularly well post May but LD won more pre May. Across the whole calendar year, about equal

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Liberal Democrats have won more local by-elections than any other party in 2025. In real elections up and down the country, only the Lib Dems are taking on Reform and winning.

@PaulTaylorIeng @LibDems 1) because different time periods (your info is post may 2025, original graphic is 2025 calendar year). 2) because your chart shows net gains, not wins. (Gains only count seats changing hands, wins includes seats held).

Delighted to have been part of making this one happen. Congratulations to Mark who worked tirelessly for this. And a very sizeable majority! That's 6 lib wins (3 gains, 3 holds) out of 6 in Surrey's 6 by-elections yesterday

Congratulations to @LibDems Andy Burton who wins the Surrey seat Hinchley Wood, Claygate and Oxshott from the Conservatives - meaning that the Conservatives lose control of Surrey County Council. Despite election visits from Kemi Badenoch et al Elmbridge have said no to the Conservatives again. 🔶

🌳 | The 2 Conservative losses in Surrey tonight see them LOSE control of Surrey County Council. Elections were postponed in Surrey in 2025 due to local government reorganisation - electors will now vote in 2026 to the new shadow authority.
