If the Stranger Things writers wrote Lord of the Rings: GANDALF: OK, so we've got to put the smackdown on this Ring thing. It can only be destroyed - GIMLI: Don't worry - I got this. *hits it with an axe and falls* Ow. GANDALF: - in the fires of Mount Doom. BOROMIR: I just don't get it. Why can't we just fire this bad boy up and use it against Sauron? Boom. Headshot. GANDALF: OK, so, think of Sauron like this Atari. *Clears off pedestal and slaps down an Atari and a copy of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.* GANDALF: Now, if we destroy this copy of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, we might think it's gone forever. But - ELROND: - but Atari still has the source code. GANDALF: Right. *starts drawing on a transparent whiteboard* - But, if we destroy the source code - LEGOLAS: ... the existing copies could be buried in a landfill, and they'd eventually go bad from corrosion. GANDALF: Exactly. Destroy the source code - ELROND: - destroy Sauron. BOROMIR: Great. So how do we destroy this Source Code Ring? It's not like we can just hop on our skateboards and shred into Mordor. LEGOLAS: Hang on though. If we gave the Ring to someone small enough - GIMLI: - Sauron wouldn't be expecting it - ELROND: - and we could chuck it right into the fire while he's busy trippin' over Minas Tirith. Every other day or so, I see someone attacking dividend growth investing Person A - selects some time period that fits their narrative and then selects one of the dividend etfs, typically the one that hasn't done well recently (e.g. $SCHD). They ignore the time periods that looked good, or any other ETFS that may have done better. Many times they also end up ignoring dividends, and focus on prices only. They then compare that dividend etf $SCHD versus S&P 500 ETF like $SPY and conclude that "dividends are terrible" Person B is a holder of said ETF, and is visibly concerned. They ask - so I should sell $SCHD, right? Person A - duh, dump it. Person B - Ok, so I will sell all of SCHD and put it all in $VOO Person A - nope, it's not that simple you dummy. You have a US Bias. You shouldn't just own US stocks. Jeez I knew dividend investors were dumb. Person B -ok, you sold me. So sell $SCHD and buy $VOO and $VXUS. Go it. Person A - well, nope, you also need to own bonds. Haven't you heard about sequence of returns risk? Also, you can't just own large caps. You need to own small caps too, haven't you heard about the small cap effect? You also need exposure to emerging markets. So in the end, Person B ends up with a diworsified portfolio closely resembling a Target Date Fund. This portfolio ends up with a lower historical performance than their existing dividend fund. That's of course assuming they end up doing this on their own and not being sold by someone that charges them 1%/year for the priviledge of investing their money in a target date fund... Ultimately, the best thing you can do as an investor is to select a strategy, and stick to it. Changing strategies based on what has done well recently could be a dangerous path for you as an investor. Note, nothing wrong with sticking to a target date fund, if that's what you want, as long as you stick to it. However, nothing wrong with sticking to a dividend portfolio, if that's what you want, as long as you stick to it.
