@Peston @afneil @wesstreeting Without Streeting, this will unravel fast! If the conservatives got into power tomorrow, I'd keep Streeting in as health secretary! Streeting was the one articulate person on the front bench, lol

@Alan851603 @MysticStock @afneil Actually the OPEC oil issues opened up wounds that had been festering in the western world for some time. It's the reason why USA changed the speed limit from 70mph to 55mph. John browns shipyard closed because it was making ships the way they did in 1900. Metaphor for problems.

@MysticStock @Gregory_Mullins @afneil You have to understand the fallout from the 1973 OPEC oil price rise to understand the 1970s. Tory mismanagement of that broke Heath’s government in 1974, and Labour had to clear up the mess and deal with inflation > 25%. It was mostly over when Thatcher came in (& messed it)

Amazing post. Even Diane isn’t that economically stupid.

@afneil Hold on a minute Andrew, it was your conservative government that put us into the £3T black hole by selling off all of our assets.

@strong69379 @WiganEmptySeat @afneil Actually, reasoning requires the use of opinion. I've just given you a historical fact. If we did default on our debt, borrowing would be replaced by our current interest rate payments The USA spends 130% of its GDP & france around 110% who's economy is our borrowing proping up?

@strong69379 @WiganEmptySeat @afneil That's not actually true, there is absolutely no historical evidence that if the Greeks did default on their debt, that they would have to leave the euro. It was only ever threatened! They were allowed to join the euro with a fictional balance sheet (that actually happend!).

@Peston What total nonsense. There is no scenario where there isn't a leadership contest regardless of any one member. The herd will move as one very soon. Because without the unions money, Labour are F@#£%&

The prime minister’s survival is probably now in the hands of his former deputy, Angela Rayner. Now that she has been absolved of wrongdoing by HMRC, his get-out-of-jail is to offer her the health job vacated by Streeting or perhaps any job she wants. She is strong enough to dictate terms, because she represents a large part of the parliamentary Labour Party that wants him out. So if she throws him a lifeline, they may too. I am imagining the conversation in which Rayner says to the PM that she fancies being Chancellor of the Exchequer and she is sure Rachel Reeves would excel as health secretary. This is currently all the stuff of fiction, except that whether Rayner agrees to take any job from Starmer is potentially life or death for him

@Asht3ch @richardpbacon I was making the point that we don't know and the way the story is presented is pretty litigious. I'm no fan of Nigel, but this story has deep issues. You cannot randomly buy a house in cash after having 5m, dumped in your account, fact!

@WiganEmptySeat @strong69379 @afneil That's actually not true. That's what they were told until it was to late. This is well versed historical fact. In fact, the Germans knew all along that the better option for Greece and the Euro would have been to help forgive the debt. But they chose to overburden instead!

@justdavenow89 @richardpbacon He had just had his house firebombed, what if the move was for a more secure location? The story dose not make sense with how it's been reported. It's clearly 2 sets of facts merged into one.

Told Streeting's team have confirmed he has now moved behind a longer timetable. That means all the challengers and a very large proportion of the PLP are now in the same place. I'm told the bulk of the cabinet will now move in behind this position as well. Minister tells me "Game over".

@WiganEmptySeat @afneil Actually, as a point of historical fact, no there is not. What happened in Greece was they were told they had no choice but to borrow from the German banks and ultimately they would have been better off just defaulting. The German banks made off like bandits on Greece's misery.

@piersmorgan God you fool, you can't just walk into an estate agents and buy a house for £1.5m Both sets of solicitors need to prove where the money came from. I'm no fan, but this feels like two different sets of facts merged into one here. SKy might be exposed here!

Whoa… WHAT?!! Farage told us it was all for security - where did he suddenly get £1.4m in cash to buy a property if it wasn’t from Harborne’s £5m ‘gift’ ? This stinks more every day.
Sky News@SkyNews

BREAKING: Nigel Farage bought a £1.4 million property in cash, shortly after receiving a £5m personal gift from billionaire donor Christopher Harborne, Sky News learns. Sky's political correspondent @AliFortescue has this exclusive story ⬇️  trib.al/1bMRCCs

Streeting ally: "Wes has numbers but taken decision not to trigger challenge/immediate contest as clear that wouldn’t be right thing for party. Keir needs to set out a timetable and allow widest possible contest. It’s the only way to rebuild from this mess."
