@BlockEnthusiast yes, exactly, what kind of actions don’t need to incur an economic cost or alternatively, what kind of actions can generate their own fee payments internally (cf the way bitcoin txs can generate the tx fee as outputs)

protocol designers should figure out ways to enable gasless transactions note: a gasless tx is crucially distinct from a tx for which someone else pays gas on its behalf

@VitalikButerin Any person can anonymously publish our protocol txs to L1 from a fresh wallet without needing ETH (using builder sponsorships)

@VitalikButerin We are a dapp rollup, but we are stage 2 pending Noir Lang being audited. We wrote our protocol to be permissionlessly sequenced out of the box.

I take this seriously. Starting next year, I plan to only publicly mention (in blogs, talks, etc) L2s that are stage 1+, with *maybe a short grace period* for new genuinely interesting projects. It doesn't matter if I invested, or if you're my friend; stage 1 or bust. Multiple ZK-rollup teams have told me they're on track to be stage 1 by year end. I'm excited to see that happen! Of course we should not throw away training wheels become we're actually confident that the proof systems are secure; that would be irresponsible. But stage 1 (75% threshold on council to override the proof system, 26%+ of council must be outside the rollup team) is a very reasonable moderate milestone. The multisigs I'm in have not had a single liveness failure in years, let alone 26%. The era of rollups being glorified multisigs is coming to an end. The era of cryptographic trust is upon us.

If your favorite application or protocol has scaling needs and isn't using zk to enable it to be fully permissionless, it's because they're still running on "Just Trust Me Bro" technology.

So what's the end result? Publishers can accept private fee payments, prove batches, and submit it from a fresh wallet without ever revealing who they are on-chain! Other than the block builder and deposits/withdrawals, everyone stays completely anonymous and fully private.
