Like other socialists, I want to vote for candidates whose values are closest to my own. In Gwynedd Maldwyn, that unquestionably means voting Labour because its list is topped by Ian Parry - who I've known for six years and who I'm confident will fight for the values we share.

ΕΠΑΝΑΚΤΗΣΗ Από εδώ, χαράματα, ο Γιώργος ο πατέρας μου έφευγε για την Χαλυβουργική στην Ελευσίνα κι η Ελένη, η μάνα μου, για τα Λιπάσματα στη Δραπετσώνα. Χρόνια από πέτρα, σμιλεμένα με διώξεις και ιδρώτα. Όμως το μέλλον μας φαινόταν του χεριού μας. Η ελπίδα φύτρωνε σαν αγριολούλουδο παντού. Χρόνια τώρα με το ΜέΡΑ25 ταξιδεύω σ' όλη την Ελλάδα. «Δε βγαίνει ο μήνας», μου λένε. Ούτε τότε έβγαινε. Αλλά τότε τουλάχιστον οι άνθρωποι τόλμαγαν να ονειρευτούν. Μείναμε στο ευρώ, αλλά «μείναμε» από ευρώ, μονολογούν. «Πώς θα κάνουμε οικογένεια; Έτσι θα ζούμε;». Τους απαντώ ότι όλα γίνονται επανακτώντας όσα μας πήραν για να μας λεηλατούν. Γιατί σκοτώθηκαν τόσα παιδιά στα Τέμπη; Επειδή μας πήραν τα τραίνα, τα έσπασαν, τα κράτησαν απαρχαιωμένα, για να κερδίζουν από διόδια και καύσιμα οι «επενδυτές»! Γιατί τα νοίκια είναι απλησίαστα και οι νέοι άνθρωποι αναγκάζονται να μείνουν με τους γονείς τους μέχρι τα σαράντα τους; Επειδή φαντς και σέρβισερς μας βούτηξαν ενάμιση εκατομμύριο διαμερίσματα και μικρομάγαζα! Γιατί ο λογαριασμός του ρεύματος σου προκαλεί εγκεφαλικό; Γιατί κλείνει ο φούρνος της γειτονιάς σου; Επειδή το καρτέλ ενέργειας συνωμοτεί εναντίον μας! Γιατί οι τραπεζικοί υπάλληλοι απολύονται την ώρα που οι τράπεζες σε χαρατσώνουν και οι μετοχές τους πηγαίνουν στα ουράνια; Γιατί αφού τις διέσωσες, τις παρέδωσαν στα αρπακτικά! Γιατί τα σουπερμάρκετ κερδίζουν τόσα την ώρα που εσύ αγοράζεις λιγότερα; Επειδή συμπράττουν για να κλέβουν και τους παραγωγούς και εσένα! «Και τι πρέπει να κάνουμε;», με ρωτούν. ΕΠΑΝΑΚΤΗΣΗ, τους απαντώ. Επανάκτηση υποδομών ενέργειας, λιμανιών, αεροδρόμιων, κόκκινων δανείων, τραίνων –για να μένει ο πλούτος εδώ, στους πολλούς. Έτσι μόνο θα υπάρξει ρευστότητα για να χτίσουμε κοινωνικές κατοικίες, να αναβιώσουμε το Εθνικό Σύστημα Υγείας, τα σχολεία και τα πανεπιστήμια, να νικήσουμε την Ακρίβεια. Τότε με διακόπτουν: «Πάλι τα ίδια; Πάλι ελπίδα που καταλήγει σε κλειστές τράπεζες, αναστάτωση, σ’ άλλη μια συνθηκολόγηση;» Καταλαβαίνω το φόβο σου. Όμως, όσο φοβάσαι, θα μας πάρουν κι αυτά που δεν μας έχουν ήδη πάρει. Εμείς διδαχθήκαμε το μάθημά μας. Μπορούμε να επανακτήσουμε λιμάνια, αεροδρόμια, σιδηρόδρομους, κόκκινα δάνεια. Μπορούμε να σπάσουμε τα καρτέλ. Μπορούμε να μειώσουμε τον ΦΠΑ από το 24% στο 15%. Άλλα κόμματα, άλλοι πολιτικοί θα μιλήσουν κοροϊδευτικά για όλα αυτά. Εσύ πρέπει να σκεφτείς: Δουλεύουν για εσένα ή για άλλους; Γιατί όσα προτείνει το ΜέΡΑ25 έχουν ήδη εφαρμοστεί με επιτυχία αλλού. Εκεί που ο κόσμος πίστεψε στη δύναμή του. Το μόνο που έχουμε να φοβηθούμε είναι ο φόβος που θέλουν να μας παραλύει. Ώρα να τολμήσουμε. ΕΠΑΝΑΚΤΗΣΗ των απαραίτητων για την ευημερία των πολλών. Για να ξαναγίνει κανονική η ατίθαση ελπίδα. @agent_of_change “dramatically improved the lives of its people” wow! That is some claim. The war by the Epstein coalition against Iran is of course wrong and must be opposed but to portray one of the most brutal and reactionary administrations in the world as anything other is blindness.

Understanding modern Iran requires the type of anti-imperialist analytical tools Michael Parenti developed – in particular, his insight that demonisation is a weapon of war. In works like 'To Kill a Nation', Parenti showed how the machinery of propaganda constructs a target country as a rogue state, a menace to its neighbours, a threat to its own people – a process he exposed with devastating precision in relation to the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Cuba and elsewhere. The same playbook is now being run against Iran (indeed it has been for 47 years). What does an honest assessment of the Islamic Republic actually show? Under the Shah's dictatorship, Iran was a close ally of Israel and apartheid South Africa, its energy wealth concentrated in the hands of a few and placed at the service of foreign multinationals. The 1979 Revolution transformed all of that. Revolutionary Iran became the staunchest supporter of the Palestinian cause, providing extensive financial, military and logistical support to the resistance. It severed relations with the apartheid regime and supported the South African liberation struggle. It brought its natural resources under public ownership and directed the revenues towards people's welfare. And it repositioned itself internationally: today Iran is a member of BRICS, a member of the SCO, a crucial node in the Belt and Road Initiative, and a close partner of China, Russia, Venezuela and Cuba. On the social front, the picture is again striking. People often assume that Iran is a hugely backward society, and yet women's literacy has risen from 30 to 99 percent. Women make up 60 percent of university students, 40 percent of doctors and 70 percent of STEM graduates. Healthcare and education indicators are excellent. None of this means an anti-imperialist has to share the governing ideology of the Islamic Republic. One can be a Marxist and still recognise the plain truth: the revolution transformed Iran for the better, dramatically improved the lives of its people, and asserted genuine national sovereignty.
