Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we reaffirm our commitment to ending all forms of gender-based violence. The Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) stands out as the first international legally binding framework to include specific provisions on gender-based violence (GBV). This milestone recognizes a critical reality: irresponsible arms transfers can facilitate or exacerbate violence, particularly against women and girls. By requiring States Parties to assess the risk that exported weapons could be used to commit or facilitate GBV, the ATT places the prevention of such violence at the core of responsible arms transfer decisions. At CSP11, States Parties took another important step by endorsing the appointment of Gender Focal Points within the ATT Secretariat. This decision strengthens our collective capacity to integrate gender considerations across ATT implementation and to promote more inclusive, informed, and effective practices. Today serves as a reminder that progress is possible — and that we must continue working together to ensure that the ATT remains a tool for preventing violence, protecting lives, and advancing gender equality. #IDEVAW #GBV #ArmsTradeTreaty #ATT #GenderEquality #25November
