Following a successful lunar flyby, the Artemis II crew is now officially on the return leg of their historic mission, heading back toward Earth. The Orion spacecraft has completed its swing around the far side of the Moon and is following a carefully calculated return trajectory, guided by precise engine burns. The mission, which spans approximately 10 days and covers about 685,000 miles (1.1 million km), is entering its final phase. At their farthest point, the astronauts traveled 252,756 miles (406,771 km) from Earth — farther than any humans in history. With the Moon now behind them, the crew’s attention turns to the voyage home. Over the next several days, Orion will continue its journey through deep space before making its high-speed reentry into Earth’s atmosphere and splashing down in the ocean.
