Prop 13 is the California family trust fund of state policy. Granny buys a LA beach shack in 1980 for $80k, it’s now worth $4M. She passes it to her grandkid, who pays taxes on $80k. Meanwhile the transplant renting the converted garage pays $50k/year in rent

While our main focus at the moment is on scaling up our river systems, our work to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch continues in parallel. Key is knowing where to sweep, as the patch is vast and very “patchy.” If we manage to accurately predict where the trash hotspots form, we can massively reduce the cost and time it takes to fully clean it up. Our idea is to use oceanographic modeling to get us roughly in the right areas, and then use drones to fine-tune the trajectories of the systems on a local scale. This summer, we’re returning to the patch for a six-week research trip to put all this to the test. This will be a key milestone toward making the Great Pacific Garbage Patch history.

How much does it pay? Genuinely asking. My experience from the US (where I grew up) is people pound the table about skills shortages and when you ask what they’re paying, it’s equivalent to working at Walmart in a no-skill job.

Why don’t neighborhoods like the Richmond and Sunset in San Francisco look more like the Upper West Side? But instead of 20–30 story apartments like Manhattan, it’s mostly 2-story houses. That’s tens of thousands of market-rate homes that could exist. Why didn’t it happen?
