Shoichi Yokoi was a tailor and a soldier who was sent to Guam in 1943, as part of the Japanese forces that occupied the island.
In 1944, the Americans invaded and recaptured Guam, and most of the Japanese soldiers were killed or captured. Yokoi and a few others escaped into the jungle, where they lived in hiding, scavenging for food and water, and avoiding contact with the locals. They believed that the war was still going on, and that any news of peace was propaganda.
They also feared being tortured or executed by the Americans if they surrendered. Yokoi made a makeshift shelter out of bamboo and leaves, where he stayed for most of his time. He also made tools and clothes out of whatever materials he could find. He was unaware of the fate of his comrades, who either died or gave themselves up over the years. He remained alone and isolated, until January 24, 1972, when he was spotted and captured by two local hunters, who were surprised to find him alive and well.
He was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and interrogated. He was shocked to learn that Japan had lost the war, and that Emperor Hirohito had surrendered in 1945. He was also amazed by the changes and developments that had occurred in the world during his absence. He returned to Japan in February 1972, where he received a hero’s welcome and a lot of media attention.
One of the most quoted lines upon his return was: "I am ashamed that I have returned alive."
He also met his family and his fiancée, who had waited for him all those years. He later married another woman, and became a farmer and a pacifist. He died in 1997, at the age of 82.
