@SianGriffiths6 @MetroUK This needs to be very carefully thought through since all my teacher friends are already knackered having to deliver mixed mode teaching whilst many are home schooling at the same time. Why not plan a 2-3 year gradual catch up curriculum instead of quick fix.

@MaryCurnockCook @UniGuyDavid @markcorver The sector certainly needs to be congratulated for responding quickly to the rapidly changing circumstances post August 13th. I wonder what impact, if anything, this will have on continuation rates as these students progress in the years ahead?

This thread from @markcorver looks at recruitment across high, medium and lower tariff universities, showing that all have had a better year than recently. For high tariff, a bumper year. The sector has responded to the extraordinary grade inflation thrown up by Covid year

One 2020 concern was that powerful "higher tariff" universities (e.g. @RussellGroup ) would respond to weak demand by lowering grades, devastating recruitment elsewhere. This has not occurred. Demand is high, not low: total recruitment is at 508,090, a record for this point.(1/6)

@UniGuyDavid Many people do not understand the complexity of the application process. CAG results has have solved one problem but caused others. In 2019 students on average underperformed their offers by 2.35 grades. This year they have potentially by 0. The system works for 2.35 but not 0.

There is no way round this but to offer deferrals. For fairness, EU citizens have to come in 2020 due to the post-Brexit fee hike for 2021.
Despite intentions, the move to CAG does not solve the problems the media and many commenters thought it would. As those in HE knew.

Lots of reporting that UK uni places have been offered to "other students" meaning those who had grades upgraded have lost out. It's not true. What's happened is that unis make more offers than places. It's part of the process 1/4

@Arthur_Paneal @JoDoeNL @educationgovuk Was it the C grade predictions which were lowered. Accuracy of predictions increases with Grades. Algorithm probably has this factored in since last year 79% of students were over predicted according to UCAS end of cycle report for 2019 with C and below being the least accurate.

@JoDoeNL @educationgovuk We had a big bulge of C-B grade students this year and none below this. The algorithm has pushed our bottom two down to an E from a C. I'd imagine to normally distribute our grades (dubious practice with a group size of 9! ). I'd have begrudgingly accepted ds but not two Es.

@nickhillman The algorithm is not fair. To trust teachers is fair and their assessments should be ysed. Teachers care about their students, algorithms don't.

Salaries and status are not what today’s young people are looking for, so policymakers shouldn’t judge courses that way either, says Julia Buckingham (President of @universitiesuk). Look out for a report from HEPI and @Unite_Student next week which will discuss this.
