The Cleveland Clambake Tradition: A Story They Missed We were thrilled to see Food & Wine confirm what Northeast Ohio already knows: that Cleveland is the unsuspecting capital of the New England clambake tradition! 🔗 Learn More: foodandwine.com/cleveland-clam… While they highlighted the local love for this classic seafood feast in their article, we must point out they overlooked a crucial chapter of Cleveland clambake history by not including us! For us, a clambake isn't a menu item—it’s a social event built on sacred history. This tradition is masterminded by our Irish Kevin, who has been hosting clambakes since the 1960s, from backyard parties to the Westside Irish American Club, and now presiding over every sold-out event at Gunselman's Tavern and Steakhouse. Our commitment runs deep, just like our time-honored recipes for stuffed cabbage and meatloaf. The clambake used to be a multi-day social affair, starting the night before with scrubbing and soaking the clams; now we get them from Joe at Lobster Brothers in Westlake so we don't have to do that part anymore. These days The Gunselman's Clambake morning begins with starting the steamer for our unique clambroth recipe and prepping for the fresh Ohio sweet corn, potatoes, roasted half chickens and Irish Kevin's highly sought-after chowder. We open the doors at 11 AM so everyone can get settled in with a beer or Bloody Mary before we begin passing out cups of that freshly basting clam broth. The goal is the party: most tables seat four to ten people because our guests are seeking out the shared laughter, stories, and jokes that go with a clambake. The atmosphere—the aroma of the clam steamer, the sounds of the burners, and the steaks on the charcoal grill outside—is what memories are made of. We now serve 2,000 clams per event, relying on Joe at Lobster Bros. in Westlake for the perfect bagged New England clams, but the spirit of that original clambake party remains the same.
