Right now, if you go to Thika Prison, a packet of mandazi containing six pieces is sold to prisoners at KSh 100. Outside prison, the same amount can be bought for around KSh 60. Since prisoners have no other option, they are forced to buy at those exaggerated prices. Isn’t overpricing basic items a form of theft? On every packet of mandazi sold, someone is making a profit of about KSh 50. With many prisoners inside, around 800 packets are sold every day. That translates to about KSh 40,000 profit daily and nearly KSh 1.2 million every month. This culture of exploitation began during Wanini Kireri’s time and has continued to this day. During our training, KSh 1,800 was deducted from our salaries. We were told it was “Pesa ya Kinyozi.” Ironically, the barbers were fellow recruits who never received any payment from that money. The electricity used was paid for by the government, and even the shaving machines belonged to the government. We were about 3,000 recruits. That amounts to KSh 5.4 million collected in total pure exploitation.
