@ModernVintageG More than a decade ago we had to reinstall Windows 7 and lost the key. There was a sequence of characters in my head that I forgot what was for. Tried it and it ended up being the Windows 7 key. Missed the days when you unwittingly memorized these.

@benlandautaylor Interesting. There was a case in a University where I studied. A professor uncovered unethical behavior by the faculties, stealing student's ideas, and writing papers without acknowledging the students. That professor was refused tenure. Integrity is punished more excessively.

A one-year ban for submitting totally fake nonsense as though it were real research is *insultingly* lenient.

@btshapir Left a PhD program for nonacademic reasons (good grades and got along well on the research with my adviser). After a few years, I can't get back to any PhD program even with a good research background and GPA. Noticed the difference given I was already admitted before.

So many PhD students flame out because they can't come up with interesting research questions.
I can't help but think part of that is b/c they spent a decade only thinking about maximizing chance of PhD admit at the expense of thinking about interesting problems in the world
