In rural India, when crops fail due to heatwaves or drought, livestock becomes the ultimate safety net. Yet, the women who perform the majority of animal care often do so with the least access to veterinary services, finance, and decision-making power. At ILRI, we are investigating the "Gender-Climate" nexus. Through the Gender-Livestock-Climate Analytic Approach (GLCAA), we are uncovering how climate stress intensifies gender inequality—and how empowering women can stabilize entire food systems. Using the Women’s Empowerment in Livestock Index (WELI), we surveyed households across five states - Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Gujarat, and Rajasthan - to identify exactly where the gaps in power and resources lie. Our response combined immediate relief with long-term skill building: 🩺 Treated 2,000+ animals for parasitic and nutritional ailments, providing an essential lifeline to families in climate-vulnerable zones. 🎓 Equipped 280 women with climate-smart management skills, focusing on water efficiency and fodder conservation to withstand environmental shocks. 🛡️ Shifted the focus from "crisis management" to regular vaccinations and check-ups, safeguarding household assets. By positioning women as the primary managers of climate-smart livestock systems, we aren't just improving livelihoods; we are ensuring that India’s rural economy is built to last.
