3 1/2 yrs ago, Virginia proposed to have all kids in the same math class until 11th grade. This school year, the new accountability system will make it very difficult for a school to not offer Algebra to middle schoolers. Proud to have spent months advocating for it to happen🥹

@ToddTruitt76508 Are you aware of/involved in any other efforts to bring VA math course offerings and standards more in line with high-performing nations? Math isn’t my main area of work but curious to know!

@HCPSJeremy It was definitely not international norms. VA and CA were in the same working group. California had to put pen to paper, and it was full of misleading citations and ideas. Many of VMPI's ideas were tried & failed in CA in the 90s - some were 100 years old. x.com/ToddTruitt7650…

Actually, many of those ideas had been tried and failed in the 90s, some were even 100 yrs old & had failed repeatedly. @ToddTruitt76508 Thanks for article link will check it out. The SOA is 8VAC20-131-90.C law.lis.virginia.gov/admincode/titl… VMPI (as I understood it) wanted to bring international norms for high quality math coursework to VA but all many people heard was “no higher level math classes”.

@HCPSJeremy Please show me the VSOA regs on that. 96% of VA MS offer it, meaning 4% don't (which is an injustice to those kids). And integrated math is a completely different subject. Every STEM professor, STEM professional and parent I have talked to LOVES this new factor.

@ToddTruitt76508 Sec. Holton is a smart cookie so I would say it was more estimating than fabricating. I wonder how they modeled their numbers at all since so much is unknown about the "readiness" part of the calculation, which is huge for high schools (35% of rating).

@HCPSJeremy Where did that 70% number come from? Holton fabricated it b/c TSI schools lowering wasn't included in modeling. So she just assumes pretty much all TSI schools are in the 3rd category, will get bumped to the 2nd. youtu.be/CPWc0CBz680?t=…

State Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera sent a message to the admin’s edu stakeholders asking them to tweet & refute what she calls a “mis-information campaign” against the state’s new school accountability system, which will likely label most of Va’s schools as “off track”

@ToddTruitt76508 "Off track" will be 79 or fewer points on the overall index, right? Just eyeballing those models, I see maybe 4 "orange" elementary schools that would get 80 points or higher, and no orange middle schools? That's only looking at poverty, too, not EL populations.

@ToddTruitt76508 @VDOE_News The rush is in implementation - going into effect for this school year weeks after school had started in many places. If I set a goal for 80% or more of the VA Board of Ed to be licensed educators by the end of this year, how likely would they be to succeed in that time frame?

@HCPSJeremy @VDOE_News Rushed?!? This has been going on for 6+ months in detail, and almost is a year old. I've watched 20+ hours of meetings on this topic. There's been numerous listening sessions, public hearings, etc. This is similar to the system MD has - check out their school report cards

@HCPSJeremy What % of schools do you think should be in the bottom 2 tiers then? MD Governor Wes Moore's administration has rejected the equiv of 30% as too weak. And Arne Duncan supports VA's revamp, and accountability has been standard D policy for decades. x.com/ToddTruitt7650…

Excellent 🧵on Virginia's updated accountability system. Accountability has decades of D support, but VA opponents are trying to make it partisan. In Maryland, D Gov Moore's admin said equiv of 30% of schools in the bottom 2 categories there was not holding anyone accountability.
