As far as direct payments to players, Duke is not the top spender in CBB. But they do have situations like this to give players more exposure & NIL opportunities to make more money. Thank their GM Rachel Baker for the forward thinking.

A few weeks ago, a P4 basketball program posted a video of one of its athletes on camera asking everyday fans to donate to the team's NIL fund. The backlash was immediate..and understandable. These athletes are making significant, publicly reported money. Many of them earn more than the average fan being asked to open their wallet. Asking a family that budgets for season tickets and merchandise to also fund player payrolls is a tough look, and it only gets tougher when the team isn't winning. To be clear, athletes should absolutely be compensated. That ship has sailed and it sailed in the right direction...The question is where the money comes from and how programs position themselves to generate it sustainably. Passing the hat to your fanbase for out of pocket donations is not a revenue strategy, it is a stopgap, and it puts athletes in an uncomfortable position they shouldn't be in. Schools need to think more creatively than this. Build commercial infrastructure around the brand. Pursue private capital. Develop new revenue streams through sponsorships, licensing, and media rights that don't exist yet. Formalize the alumni B2B network and connect sponsors to real commercial distribution instead of just logo placement. Rethink procurement so vendors winning university spend become full ecosystem partners across sponsorship, NIL, fan programs, and alumni business channels. Treat the athletic department like the business it has become, because the old way of leaning on donors and ticket buyers to absorb every new cost isn't going to hold. The programs that keep asking fans to crowdfund roster payrolls are going to lose trust long before they even lose games.

“I’m attracted to the dark side of greatness. The gap between a hero and a villain is very similar to the gap between winning and losing and good to great. The gap is so much closer than people think. It’s the very small fundamental details that separate you,” Joe Mazzulla The immeasurable value of fundamentals.

College athletics operated in a world of uniformly price-fixed athlete compensation for a long time. That world is now gone & like with any other labor market, everyone can’t afford the same talent. That doesn’t mean prices outside your price range aren’t fair market value.
