But Leftists have the causal chain completely backwards. Voters aren’t experiencing economic pain and then scapegoating immigrants. They already have genuine grievances about mass non white immigration and demographic change and they frame them economically because that’s the language which is socially acceptable. It’s not economic distress creating anti-immigration sentiment. It’s anti-immigration sentiment being rationalised through economics.
