GRIM COMPARISON: SYRIA VS. VENEZUELA By Pedro Mario Burelli 🇸🇾 Syria, Dec 8, 2024: Assad falls. Rebels storm Damascus and open every prison in the country within hours, including the infamous Saydnaya slaughterhouse. Tens of thousands of prisoners, political dissidents, tortured opponents and even common criminals, were freed instantly. Streets filled with liberated people. Real regime change. 🇻🇪 Venezuela, nearly 3 months after US forces removed Maduro: an illegitimate @delcyrodriguezv is praised daily, claimed to be doing everything the U.S. tells her to do. But over 500 political prisoners remain incarcerated, according to @ForoPenal, while other NGOs estimate the number at 600+. Releases are now a trickle, and an amnesty law passed by an illegitimate National Assembly is arbitrary. To make matters worse, the leading jailer, torturer, and murderer, Gustavo González López, has been appointed Defense Minister, with reportedly enthusiastic support from the @CIA Cabinet Secretaries and CODEL visits are being used to normalize an unacceptable and shameful situation, rather than forcing rapid freedom. Question for @MarcoRubio: Why is your concept of ‘stability’ associated with praising torturers rather than releasing their prisoners? Everything we’re witnessing is in stark contrast to your longstanding and principled defense of freedom and democracy.
