@paulmasonnews British Steel in Scunthorpe is being nationalised because the government has already spent £419 million of taxpayer money keeping it alive since April 2025, and is now reportedly facing a demand of over a billion pounds in compensation from the Chinese owner Jingye before they agree to leave. The taxpayer is being asked to pay a Chinese company a billion pounds to hand back a company we have been running for over a year. That is the deal being presented as a proud achievement. Port Talbot tells the fuller story. The steelworks that once employed 8,000 people and produced four million tonnes of steel annually closed its blast furnaces in 2024 under this government, with the loss of around 2,800 jobs. The justification was Net Zero. The replacement electric arc furnace will produce a fraction of the output and requires scrap steel rather than raw materials, meaning Britain's primary steelmaking capacity is gone. We are now a country that cannot make steel from scratch. We are a country that recycles it. Meanwhile the government has declared the North Sea closed to new licensing, driving our own oil and gas industry into managed decline while we import liquefied natural gas by tanker from the Middle East, a region now engulfed in war, and buy Norwegian gas extracted from the very same North Sea we have placed off limits to ourselves. Energy bills remain at historic highs as a direct consequence. Nationalising what remains of Scunthorpe while Port Talbot is rubble and the North Sea is closed is not saving British Steel. It is presiding over its ruins and calling it rescue.

"Are you really saying to people, you just need to wait for this speech, and then you'll discover that Keir Starmer's got it after all?" @bbcnickrobinson asks Business Secretary Peter Kyle about the public's faith in the PM following Labour's losses in the elections.

So far Starmer’s efforts to save his skin have been a classic case study in how not to save your skin: The most unpopular Labour PM in history (Starmer) calls in aid the second most unpopular Labour PM in history (Brown). With most Labour MPs despising you and willing to grant you, at most, a civilised stepping down over some months, you say you’ll be in power for a decade. Labour MPs’ worst nightmare. You commission a propaganda film of you, Brown, Rachel Reeves and Harriet Harman looking smug and self-satisfied in the Downing Street garden, complete with meaningful music. How divorced from public opinion can you be? You signal you’re fresh out of new blood (Brown? Harman?) and new ideas (getting close to the EU is the best you can come up with — hardly a game changer). You think a ‘reset’ speech (again!) can turn things round? You’re truly delusional. THE END.

I must confess to having underestimated Keir Starmer. Thumped in Thursday’s elections, this weekend he turns to Gordon Brown and Harriet Harman to rejuvenate his government with young, fresh blood. A stroke of pure genius. I foresee a second Starmer landslide come the next general election. Respect, sir.

Early days, but the Brown-Harman strategy hasn't landed particularly well so far. One normally loyal minister just said to me: "It’s a joke. There is no question to which bringing these two back is the answer."

@Lancsiron @johnnhendo Cant understand why Barrows has been offered a contract with Starbuck still under contract which will mean if Barrows accepts the offer of a new contract we will have two full backs of similar quality which doesnt say a lot.

I thought Labour government was committed to teaching pupils to spot misinformation, not sending in MPs (& would-be prime ministers) to present misinfo as fact about opponents. Shameful & laughable in equal measure. Luckily pupils will see through such shenanigans.

It is hard to believe that Labour is even considering paying £1bn a year to the EU. Has everyone forgotten that we buy more from them than they do from us, and have done ever since we joined the Common Market? If anything, they should be paying us! (Actually they shouldn’t. Free trade should be just that, free)And our exports to them post Covid are broadly on trend for pre-Brexit levels. The restraints on growth are down to appalling tax and regulatory policies, as well as some global headwinds. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

Sensible points. But too late. It’s over. You’re an even bigger busted flush than the Tories. Two-thirds of your MPs and over half the cabinet on course to lose their seats. Bye. The problem is that what comes next unlikely to be any better. We really are in trouble.

I don't think many Labour colleagues will appreciate coming back from a day canvassing for Thursday's elections to see energy being wasted on leadership speculation and talk about deliberately causing byelections, most of which comes across as rather entitled and about self-interest rather than the stability and success of the party.
