Affordable, rough-around-the-edges local theaters are gone. Everything’s cookie-cutter corporate now. We have to revive them.
Small independent spots could create our own stars and give up-and-comers real leverage when they eventually deal with the studios.
We need our own independent Chitlin’ Circuit. A move away from the boring, unremarkable experience.
Start with pop-ups in the summers, unusual venues. Eventually scale to storefront theaters like in the old days—like nickelodeons.

And I think about how short the windows are now. The Exorcist, Jaws, Halloween played forever—could they even be hits today?
A space like this could be where the next Black stars and cult classics are born.

Half the battle for "black" films is distribution. That has always been the main issue. That's what "the man" actually controls. You can make all the movies you want but if you can't get it out to the people where you can make money...what's the point? That's what they base their "Black movies don't make money" lie on, well, they don't make money if they're not in theaters. That's why this concerned me. If they still aren't giving us a chance then...
