June 24: The Network Takes Center Stage I just got back from @HPE Discover, and networking is cool again. Bandwidth still matters, but that is not the story anymore. The network is starting to run itself. That makes June 24 a good day to look back. On June 24, 1964, AT&T opened commercial Picturephone service among New York, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. The inaugural call featured Lady Bird Johnson, the sitting First Lady. It was expensive and barely used, but the idea was sound. Voice alone was never going to be enough, and the network would eventually have to carry presence. On June 24, 1993, the band Severe Tire Damage became the first act to perform live on the internet. They played from the patios of Xerox PARC and went out over the MBone, the Internet Multicast Backbone. People watched and listened as far away as Australia. The internet could do more than serve up pages and files. It could carry a live, shared moment. On June 24, 1996, @HP announced new ATM test capabilities, shown days later at Supercomm in Dallas. ATM, Asynchronous Transfer Mode, was the decade’s big bet on moving voice, video, and data across one high-speed network with predictable performance and guaranteed quality of service. All three were chasing the same problem, one we still have not fully solved: how do you carry wildly different kinds of traffic, at scale, without the whole thing falling apart when demand surges? That problem has only gotten harder. At HPE Discover, that is exactly where the conversation has moved. AI is changing how networks get built, run, and protected. Autonomous networking goes after the manual toil that buries teams in alerts, tickets, and config drift. The engineers stay. They just stop babysitting dashboards and get to work on the problems that need a human. A network like this can catch a problem, trace the cause, and clear it before users feel anything. The result is fewer outages and quicker recovery when something does break, with the network handling routine traffic shifts on its own. The timing matters, because the workloads coming next will be unforgiving. AI agents, edge computing, private 5G, Wi-Fi 7, hybrid cloud, industrial IoT, smart cities, real-time collaboration. All of it needs networks that are secure, observable, and able to recover on their own. The network used to be invisible until it broke. Now it is the thing everything else depends on, and the companies that treat it that way will pull ahead. Every June 24 on this list makes the same point. The future of tech has always run on the network underneath. @HPE @HPE_Developer @HPE_Compute #HPEDISCOVER @NVIDIANetworkng
