I'll get heat for this but... I watched the Odyssey. It surprised me. All politics aside, I left the theater actually feeling something. Anyone complaining about it is just trying to capitalize on "outrage culture". Christopher Nolan deserves an Oscar.

I do think a non-trivial part of the Odyssey's success - and the Odyssey is a bad movie and an appalling adaptation - is simply that it does not look like this.
It's not that CGI is bad per se. It's that the most common type of movie for the last decade at least has used it to the exclusion of everything else.
They've all adopted a kind of colour-vomit hyper-unreality presentation for every world they make. Superhero movies, Star Wars, He-Man. They all look - and are - completely fake.
So when something like the Odyssey comes along, which actually makes poor use of its physical surroundings, people still clamour for it because it is at least real.
