69 years ago 🇭🇺 joined the #UN. As we celebrate #UNDay, we reaffirm our commitment to the principles of the UN Charter. The need for multilateral solutions for advancing peace, development & prosperity has never been greater.

Civil society actors, incl human rights defenders, are crucial to our efforts to uphold human rights and achieve peace & development, yet many face intimidation & reprisals for cooperating with the UN. Today Ireland 🇮🇪 & Uruguay 🇺🇾 on behalf of 79 co-signatories + EU 🇪🇺 stood united in #3C, calling for an end to reprisals. ❗️"Allowing Western-supplied weapons to strike deep into Russian territory would pose a serious escalation risk," said FM Péter Szijjártó in New York, responding to Ukraine’s recent demand. 🕊️ The minister emphasized that after nearly 1,000 days of war, "this conflict has no solution on the battlefield. Arms deliveries have only led to more casualties and driven peace further away." He warned that "the longer the war continues, the more destruction and loss of life we will see." 🌍 He called Ukraine’s proposal to use Western weapons for deep strikes against Russia "extremely dangerous," stressing that it could spread the war to neighboring countries, including Hungary. "From Hungary’s perspective, and for global security, it would be highly dangerous if Western weapons were used for such strikes." 📜 Minister Szijjártó reiterated that "the only solution is a ceasefire and peace negotiations." He also welcomed that some Western countries have not yet allowed this escalation and hoped that "no one crosses this red line." At the UN, he emphasized that Hungary is part of the global majority pushing for peace talks and the end of the conflict.

🏅FM Szijjártó: "A huge success for Hungary in New York, especially in an Olympic year!" 🌐 The UN General Assembly, with unanimous consent, has adopted Hungary's initiative to declare May 19 as World Fair Play Day. 🇭🇺 🤝 The resolution, co-authored by 92 member states including China, the USA, Germany, South Korea, and more, highlights global support for the spirit of sportsmanship, respect for rules, and opposition to violence and doping. 🏆 With the support of 92 countries, Hungary has successfully promoted a global coalition that reinforces the values of fair play, just weeks before the XXXIII Summer Olympic Games. From now on, May 19 will be celebrated as World Fair Play Day.
