Ananda Lewis (B.A. ’95), the voice of a generation, died from breast cancer on June 11, 2025. Just two years after her Howard graduation, she hosted BET’s “Teen Summit,” a talk show that gave an unfiltered voice to Black teens and the issues they cared about. After Teen Summit, she became an MTV video jockey, hosting MTV’s Total Request Live and Hot Zone. She used her history training to lead discussions about history in the making, including the Columbine shooting and racial profiling. Lewis won NAACP Image Awards for her work on BET and MTV, hosted the syndicated The Ananda Lewis Show, became a correspondent for The Insider, and even hosted TLC’s While You Were Out show after earning her associate’s degree in carpentry. As a history major at Howard, she was known for her intelligence as well as her grace and beauty, as she was chosen to appear in the video “Baby I’m Yours,” a song recorded by her fellow Bison, the music group Shai.
