Good morning. Today’s UK data suggest that an already soft labor market has been undermined by the fallout from the Middle East War. Specifically: Britain’s unemployment rate edged up to 5% in April, with youth unemployment increasing to around three times that level (the highest level in 11 years). Payrolls fell by 100,000 in April, worse than the consensus forecast. Job vacancies declined to 705,000, their lowest level in five years. Headline wage growth slowed from 3.6% in March to 3.4% in April. Although the inclusion of bonuses pushed the growth rate from 3.9% in March to 4.1% in April, the underlying trend in the private sector—the engine of domestic job creation—softened to 3%.
