I was a very competent open water endurance swimmer when I was younger. I have been in rip currents. I have helped save someone in rip currents. I had spare life vest for the other person and it still was extremely touch and go.
Helping someone else in the water is so, so hard.

When someone is struggling your job is to find floatation and something you can use as a rope. Even excellent swimmers struggle to help someone who is drowning. Please, please don't repeat this mistake.
